What does Facebook know about you?

Facebook knows what you do on Facebook and, through other businesses, much of what you do elsewhere: companies send Meta records of what you did on their own sites and apps. Meta’s “Download your information” export, in JSON, holds it all. Drop it into Privapanda to read it on your own device.

What’s in your Facebook export

  • The ad interests Meta filed you under, and advertisers who used or uploaded your information.
  • Activity off Meta: the businesses that sent Meta records of what you did on their sites and apps.
  • Meta’s guesses about you, such as age group, languages and locations.
  • Your logins and account activity, with locations.
  • Place tags on your posts, and where your photos were taken.
  • Your chats with Meta AI.

What Privapanda shows you

  • Which businesses report your activity to Meta, and how many records they sent.
  • What Meta thinks you’re into, and which advertisers have your information.
  • Meta’s guesses about you, where you’ve logged in from, and the places tied to your posts and photos.

Your private messages are never opened. Photos and videos are skipped; only the location details Meta saved alongside them are read. Your files are read in your browser and never uploaded.

How to download your Facebook data

  1. Open Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information.
  2. Choose “Download or transfer information” and pick your Facebook profile.
  3. Pick “All available information”, or just: Ads information, Personal information, Logged information, Apps and websites off of Facebook, Your Facebook activity.
  4. Choose “Download to device”. Date range: All time. Format: JSON. Media quality: Low.
  5. Download every part and drop them all into Privapanda together.

Meta emails you when it’s ready, within minutes to a few days. Large zips are fine. We read them in pieces and skip photos and videos.

How to turn it off

Cut off what other businesses send Meta about you

  • Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → “Your activity off Meta technologies” → Clear previous activity.
  • Then “Manage future activity” → Disconnect future activity.

Limit the ad profile Meta built on you

  • Accounts Center → “Ad preferences” → Manage info, and turn off ads based on activity from ad partners.
  • Accounts Center → “Ad preferences” → Ad topics, and see less of anything you don’t want targeted.

Stop handing over your location

  • In your phone’s settings, open “Location” (iPhone: Privacy & Security → Location Services) and set Facebook to Never, or only while using it.
  • Remove location tags from old posts you don’t want public.

Clear your Meta AI chats

  • Delete the Meta AI chats you don’t want kept, and think twice before telling it anything personal.

Menus move around: if a step doesn’t match, search the app’s settings for the words in quotes.
