What does ChatGPT know about you?

ChatGPT keeps every chat you haven’t deleted. Its data export also holds your account details, your training settings, the chats you shared by link and the ads you were shown. Ask for it in Settings → Data controls → Export data, then drop the zip into Privapanda to read it on your own device.

What’s in your ChatGPT export

  • Every conversation you haven’t deleted: your messages and ChatGPT’s replies.
  • Your account: email, phone number, birth year and plan.
  • Your training settings: whether your chats, voice and video can be used to train OpenAI’s models.
  • The chats you shared by link.
  • The ads you were shown, and the advertisers behind them.

What Privapanda shows you

  • The themes, projects and worries that run through your chats, and when you tend to chat.
  • Which advertisers reached you inside ChatGPT.
  • Whether your chats are training OpenAI’s models, and how many are open to anyone with the link.

Privapanda reads only what you wrote, not ChatGPT’s replies, and leaves out your email, phone number and account id. Your files are read in your browser and never uploaded.

How to download your ChatGPT data

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls → Export data.
  2. Confirm the export.
  3. Download the zip from the email and drop it into Privapanda.

OpenAI emails a download link. It can take a few days. The link in the email expires after about a day.

How to turn it off

Stop your chats training their models

  • Settings → Data controls → turn off “Improve the model for everyone”.

Delete shared links you no longer need

  • Settings → Data controls → “Shared links” → Manage, and delete the ones you don’t need.

Review what ChatGPT remembers about you

  • Settings → Personalization → “Memory” → Manage memories, and delete anything you wouldn’t tell a stranger.

Keep the sensitive stuff out of chatbots

  • Don’t paste ID numbers, health records, bank details or passwords. If you need help with a document, remove names and numbers first.

Menus move around: if a step doesn’t match, search the app’s settings for the words in quotes.
